Heartwood | Built 1867  | Reborn 2016  | A celebration of 150 years.

Budding home renovators, builders, architectural voyeurs and dreamers alike are invited to follow the journey from paper and pen to a creative construction of stone, glass and timber.

Follow the Heartwood Project Team as they restore, rebuild and remodel this small piece of early settlement history in one of Adelaide's most sought-after residential areas and prettiest towns in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia.

Now completed, Heartwood is a blue-ribbon secluded hideaway built around twin historic stone cottages, transformed through design and craftsmanship into a modern home which offers resort style living in a semi-rural setting.

Meet the people of Heartwood

The Principle Architect and Design Lead

Pauline M. Hurren BE FRAIA | Hurren Architects

Award winning Pauline Hurren is personally hand crafting the design of a tailor-made solution, embracing the significant site conditions and the relationship of the building to its surroundings, adjacent properties, its outlook and the environment.

Acclaimed for her work in stone and historic re-adaptation design, Pauline has been in practice for 40 years, is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects and in 2005, with professional recognition achieved in receiving the Sir James Irwin Medal for Exemplary Service to Architecture.

The Artisan Tradespeople

Artisan Tradespeople | Guided by masters

On this stone dwelling transformation, the construction is carried out by artisan tradespeople – under the guidance of masters, such as stonemason Adrian Barensten; Carpenter Clint Peel; Plasterer Dave Brigham; Painter Ross Pirone.

With advice from leading South Australian experts in appropriate heritage hardscaping, the tiered gardens are again responding to care and nurture. A collection of cool climate camellias again nestle in the shade under the oak and gums, leading to the refurbished naturalistic swimming pool facing to a green and open valley vista.
